I love this state.
We went through the entire process of getting three independent bids for our plumbing work, reviewed the insurance and claim history of all three groups, and picked one. They were the middle price, the largest company, and the most reputable in terms of information available to me.
Now, we’re having the “winners” out to make their material list and do the final planning. I specified that they were going to pull the permits for all the work. Now the rats start coming out: Suddenly, I’m talking to “Frank” in the office. Frank wants me to understand that sometimes getting the inspectors involved is more trouble than it’s worth. Sometimes there are building code issues, you see. Sometimes, well, they have to charge a premium for having a master plumber wait around for an inspector to come check his work.
Their policy is to “do it right, but not get the inspectors involved.” This is a large and reputable company, with no outstanding complaints, full time employees, insurance, license…everything. I can understand this behavior in a small, one or two person shop…but these people have stationary for God’s sake.
AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
How much does it cost to have the job done right such that you’re not dodgy about the inspectors? I’m getting violently screwed by the fact that the previous owner pulled no permits, ever, and did everything to the minimum standard that might possibly work for a little while. It’s worth money to me to do this.
The conflicting issue is that I don’t want to walk up to a contractor and say “please charge me more, I’m dumb.”
