Serenity

It’s not a great movie, not a bad movie. I was entertained.

The fantasy world is pretty cool. I like a story that takes place in what is clearly a much larger world, because it gives me fodder for internal storytelling in the days and weeks to come. Clearly there’s some back-story on these characters … and there’s lots and lots of space for follow on and prequil stories.

The movie itself is straight-up hokey. The character of the agent / samurai guy is good…but he should kick a lot more ass than he does. When a monk goes hand to hand with a cowboy, the monk should win, hands down. Maybe there is a lot more to the story which makes this captain more than Han Solo … but it’s not in the movie.

They did well with the psychic battle chick. I kept leaning over to redmed and muttering “you can’t out kung-fu a combat psychic.” When she jumps through the blast doors at the end, it was pretty clear from the get-go that she had no intention of being a noble sacrifice. It was just finally the fight that she’d been spoiling for, her entire life. You want to take down a battle-psychic, you do it from orbit, with beam weapons.

All in all, I got my money’s worth. I was entertained.

The very best part of the movie was the previews. We’ve got Doom, Aeon Flux, and Zorro coming out. Was I good this year? Yay!
