This new law that just got passed, about Terri Schiavo, is really pissing me off.
(1) I think that it’s obvious that she should be allowed to die: We’re talking about a woman who hasn’t been responsive in 15 years. There are two possibilities: She’s intellectually gone; or else she’s been trapped in a particular version of hell in which she can’t respond to people around her for the last 15 years. Either way, in my opinion, we should let her go.
(2) Fake Christians piss me off: The pushy, hypocritical, egocentric, lying, false, wanna-be Christians are infuriating on this one. Every day this week I’ve seen pictures in the paper of people kneeling out front of her husband’s house, pretending to pray. Really, they’re just somewhere between protesters and criminals. I’m not sure where the law comes down on people picketing outside a private residence. In any event, I guess they don’t read their bibles:
Matthew 6:5-6 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Further on, in Matthew 7:
Judge not, that ye may not be judged.
Still further: Stupid, fundamentalist hypocrites: These are the same goddamn people who push for the sanctity and permanence of the marital bond. The woman’s husband decided it’s time to let her go. Why not step back and let the man play the supposed man’s role in the marriage, eh? Pick one or the other, people: Either they’re “one flesh,” and he can do whatever he wants, or else marriage is a legal convenience which can be superseded by legislative action (which is the path they’re on).
These snide, self centered, arrogant, holier-than-thou punks will all burn in the Hell that they made up.
(3) We’re screwing up our government over it: The thing that’s getting me the most though: We’ve got same-day legislation being passed, with a particular individual’s name in it. This is pure insanity. The point of legislature is to codify social rules into laws, using debate and deliberation to be sure that the laws aren’t ill formed. We have enough trouble making laws that do what they’re supposed to do when there’s time for appropriate debate. Laws should never, ever be passed in the heat of the moment, and for God’s sake why is congress wasting day after day on this particular person?
There are long standing precedents for this sort of thing. If action needs to be taken today, that’s the role of an executive: A governor, even a president can intervene. If a decision needs to be made on current laws, that’s judicial. For the legislature to jump in on a hot button topic and waste its time debating and passing a law that only applies to one person (who will certainly be dead in 50 years, but we’ll still have the law on the books is the height of selfish foolishness.
It’s not like they don’t have anything else to be working on, either. There are lots of people who will be dead from other executive and judicial decisions in the two weeks that it’s going to take Schiavo to pass. Hell, we’re pushing species into extinction on a daily basis. Legislate that, dumb-asses.
