Travels

Posting from Ann Arbor, 12th floor of the Campus Inn. redmed‘s prospective employer put us up here, at some obscene daily rate. So far I’ve identified a couple of value points (umbrellas in a little umbrella stand, dimmer switches on all the lights) which justify a little bit of expense … but not this much. I’m assuming that the remainder is intended to flatter us, or something.

Similarly flattering was being taken out to dinner. Nice group of people. I got to sit next to the big boss and make polite chit chat. Polite chit-chat sucks, so I went out on a limb and talked about the Dalai Lama, renewable energy, and mission work in Haiti. I had a good time. We’ll have to see as time goes on, if I did any damage.

Wedding in Kalamazoo yesterday was fun. The groom and all the groomsmen are local firefighters, and the fire chief is a close relative. Therefore, they got an engine with “just married” on the windows. The couple have a boy, maybe 4 years old, who got to ride in the fire engine when the bride and groom went off in it after the wedding. The look on his face was something similar to what I might look like if you offered me a ride in the space shuttle.

Tomorrow, redmed abandons me to do the interview shuffle, and I go “network,” before hooking up with simianpower for an afternoon of debauched revelry. Okay, we’re both old and tired, so it’ll probably be less debauched than one might imagine … but still. We’re dreaming big here. Deep fried entrees may be in order.

In other news, I’m more than halfway through Nothing in Particular. It’s a very dark book, with lots of anger. Written from the perspective of a 16 year old girl with abusive parents, growing up in a town she hates. Not my usual cup of tea, and I’m finding that it’s easiest taken in small doses. Still, it’s pushing my mind in interesting directions. Most of the times that I’ve read about domestic violence, it’s been quite clinical. This is a whole different world for me.
