  • Update

It seems I haven’t been posting very much lately. It’s not so much that I’m overly busy, as that I’m grouchy.

    my week

  • Karate benefit

My karate school did a benefit for the Tomorrow Fund. A video montage is here. I did the hurkey-jerky video recording, Dan stitched it together. So, yeah, this is the school where I hang out.

It’s 76MB, which may be large for some of you.

  • Go Fish!

Fisherman speared by blue marlin off Bermuda

HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — A fisherman was recovering from surgery after he was speared in the chest and knocked into the Atlantic Ocean by a blue marlin during a fishing competition off Bermuda’s coast.

This is what comes of scheduling the fishing competition at the same time and place as the “ballsiest marlin” competition. I root for the fish. Not that this badass individual is still out there.

  • Tesla

I’ve never felt real automotive lust before, but the Tesla Roadster has me all a-quiver.

It’s an electric car that goes from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, plus it’s dead sexy.

    Only $100K. I want one.

  • Toilet

Gained another level in home-repair land: I installed a toilet today. It’s actually pretty simple.

    Pictures.

Jen’s take on the whole situation.

  • Many short stories

Just got done canning the pickled beets. I love beets, since everything they touch becomes red. I now have red palms. I think that I finally understand pickled beets. It used to take me about three hours to make a batch, now it’s down to one (plus half an hour processing time during which I can do other stuff). The key is in the skinning and slicing. Once you understand how to skin a beet, many other parts of the process become trivial.

Also mixed up another batch of gazpacho. Added the leftover seveche from last night to it as an afterthought, and *wow*. Those two things go together really nicely. I made a scallop seveche yesterday, on a whim, and we only ate about a third of it. Now it gains new life as part of a tomato soup!

Bought a tiny chiminea yesterday. It’s about a foot tall, and can only handle small twigs and sticks. Still, it was pleasant to sit outside and watch a cheerful little fire burn in a cheerful little fire pot.

Today I’m installing Windows on a laptop given to me by a friend. This will mean that I have a Windows machine around, should I need one. Very convenient … but this whole “software you have to pay for” thing is a pain in the butt! License codes, piracy protection, blah blah.

  • TED

I’ve been watching the TED lectures in my spare time of late. TED is an annual conference that brings together innovators, thinkers, movers and shakers. I have yet to find one of those talks that’s not worth listening to.

Pictures from last weekend are up.
