It began as an ordinary Tuesday evening.

My birthday.
Be it hereby declared: I have everything I could possibly want for my birthday. Snakes on a Plane hits the big screen on the day itself. I need no other gifts. Now, go watch the previews.
In fact, also watch previews for Borat, which should be just flat out rude.

So uncomfortably warm. It’s okay if I sit still, but I’m not really a “sit still” sort of person. So I move, I fidget, I get coffee … coffee I tell you. And so I begin to sweat. To stick to things. To leave footprints in the driveway. Yes, it’s that hot.
Yesterday was pretty good. Came into Boston. Realized that I had absconded with capital_l‘s T pass. Contacted her and arranged to get together with her and technolope for lunch. Sat at StarbuXXX until the appointed time, cranking through product support. Lunch was fun, but somewhere between arriving at the coffee shop and leaving, it had become insanely hot.
Went to BDC after lunch, and worked on software for a while, including a fun little app to work the card readers that secure their facilities. I love stuff like that. Send a string down a tcp pipe, and hear a little motor make a “click” sound. Wave a card in front of a reader and see lines appear in a log file.
So hot. Brain not working right. Time to go to StarbuXXX and sit in the AC.

Weekend
Had a good time moving technolope and capital_l into their new place. It’s awesome, far superior to the last two hovels. I have no idea how the universe will conserve the “suck” in their living arrangements, but mark my words: suck is always conserved.
redmed and I took the afternoon and walked the freedom trail in Boston. While the ancient stuff was good, what was more interesting to me was how much traffic sucked. Yes, the big dig really is closed, due to the fact that it’s started to collapse and kill people. This means that all cars are on the surface now, and traffic cops are out trying to keep things moving. Wow, that’s not going to be good tomorrow morning.
Last night we had some folks over for barbecue. It was really nice. We sat out in our shiny new lawn chairs, fired up the grill, made gaspacho, and generally enjoyed the awesomeness of a summer evening. During the afternoon I bottled my Imperial Stout, and made a “cherry conserve” which graced some waffles this morning. Oh sweet awesomeness of food preservation technology.
My friend Todd, who taught me to brew beer, won three blue ribbons for his beers at a local (MN) fair. The interesting part to me: He hasn’t brewed since March of last year. These are all at least a year old. “Born on” dates on beer == total BS.
And now, Humor

Barbecue Tonight!
Late notice: Anyone interested in Gazpacho, Chicken (or veggie burgers) on the grill, and a monstrous fresh picked salad is welcome to come over around 6 tonight. We appear to have 8 confirmations already, so I’ve settled on “infinite” amounts of food and drink.
The more the merrier.

How quickly we forget
Just got a note from one of the women with whom I went to Haiti. She was just saying ‘hi,’ and included a link to her blog. I read through it, and realized how rapidly I’ve re-assimilated into ordinary, numb, dull, ignorant life here. All the things I wrote at the time, and the ones I wrote after I got back still seem pretty cool … but sitting in my Starbucks with my $3 coffee and my whiny complaint about how the wireless is sometimes slow … I’ve lost touch already.

Personal Finance
I hate Quicken. I will only use software that works on a Mac. I need personal finance software that is not Quicken (and not produced by Intuit at all).
Advise me.
