It is currently raining flowers outside my office window.

Immigration
New essay is up: Immigration.
One of the guys at the gym touched a nerve yesterday and inspired this rant. It’s a bit more irate and pointed than the rest.
For the record, this one was late, but if I can produce another by Sunday evening, I will once again be on schedule.

Karate
Been a while since I talked about karate.I started working on the tonfa, a side handled baton descended from a grain grinding implement. It is believed to have been first “weaponized” by the okinawans, and bears a strong resemblance to the riot batons carried by police.

Pig slaughter
The person organizing our trip to Haiti wrote, asking if anyone in the group was vegetarian. I responded:

Weekend
Long week, working too hard. Customers, chip replacements, moving crap around, blah blah.

Simian Power!!!!!
The Spanish Socialist Party will introduce a bill in the Congress of Deputies calling for "the immediate inclusion of (simians) in the category of persons, and that they be given the moral and legal protection that currently are only enjoyed by human beings." The PSOE's justification is that humans share 98.4% of our genes with chimpanzees, 97.7% with gorillas, and 96.4% with orangutans. The party will announce its Great Ape Project at a press conference tomorrow. An organization with the same name is seeking a UN declaration on simian rights which would defend ape interests "the same as those of minors and the mentally handicapped of our species." According to the Project, "Today only members of the species Homo sapiens are considered part of the community of equals. The chimpanzee, the gorilla, and the orangutan are our species's closest relatives. They possess sufficient mental faculties and emotional life to justify their inclusion in the community of equals."
Needless to say, I support this mighty leap forward for our species.

Feeding time
It is so freakishly gratifying when I refill the bird feeder, and almost immediately afterwards see cute, colorful birds on it.
It is less gratifying to do the same process, except with grass seed and the bare spots on the lawn. Birds are still cute though.
All this talk of food reminds me: With redmed on call tonight, it’s time for Freakishly Spicy Theatre. Mmmmmm.

Correspondence
As I mentioned in an earlier post, my parent’s kitten was recently struck by a car and killed. My mom, being a sensitive sort, and having given a lot of thought to Buddhism in the past several years, sent a brief email note to the office of the Dalai Lama asking if it was appropriate to say the same prayers for the kitten as it would be for a human in a similar situation.
Within 24 hours she received a personal and thoughtful response:

Essays!
This one is a touch longer and more personal than the last few. Notes on a happy life. Let me know what you think.
Also, I am so back on schedule. All I have to do is produce another essay by Sunday evening, and I will be up to date again! Woo Hoo for artificial, self imposed obligations!
