  • Movie posters…

Take a movie poster. Make up a name for the movie based only on the poster. Photoshop. Many, many of these behind this link.

  • VoIP

I am filled with giddy, geeky bliss over my new Vonage service. I plugged in the device, rewired my network to make more sense, bought a package of velcro strips, shortened some wires that were entirely too long, and redid the power configuration to better balance things out…and it worked like a charm! Note that at no point did I have to even configure the damn thing. It just works. So far, I’ve only made in-house calls, but the quality seems quite good. Woo.

My abs hurt like something that hurts a lot. My brother and I got into this semi-joking competitive mode over the weekend, and ended up doing the “Extreme Fitness Challenge.” It involves a lot of running through mud and laughing. However, my standard ab routine at the karate school hurt a *lot* today. I’m trying to avoid laughter until I heal.

I’m not filled with joy now that we’ve turned on the heat in the house. Don’t get me wrong, I like the warm-ness. What I don’t like is the “gurgly gurgly” that accompanies each triggering of the thermostat. It’s like someone flushing in our walls. We have forced, hot water heat. Based on previous experience, I’m certain that it’s, for example, dumping hot water into the linen closets. Or something.

Oh yeah, and we’re having a party on Saturday. Anyone within the sound of my keystrokes is welcome. Stop by around or after 7pm for candy, homebrew, snacks, tunes, and general good times.

  • Hooters Air

I flew back from BWI this weekend. As I was getting off the rental car shuttle, I noticed that next to conventional airlines on the list was Hooters Air. I don’t know whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s a real thing. One thing that’s pretty clear is that I don’t *ever* want to try to turn in a receipt from hooters air for business travel reimbursement. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t, well, ummm, fly.

  • Up late, thoughtful

Spent the weekend at my parent’s place in NoVA.

Coming home from dinner with old friends on Friday, I grew confused: Was I in high school coming home after a study / social time? Was I home from college in the Fall and still finding my adult persona? Was I 24 and settling into working life, on a business trip? No, in fact. I’m 29 and coming home from congratulating the same friend on her impending mommie-ness. She and her husband have a nice house, good jobs, and a stable life. It was weird that this particular drive home linked together so many epochs in my life.

It was really good to chill with my family over the weekend. They all seem to follow this journal, so that’s enough said about that.

Visited and admired the home of technolope and capital_l. They were kind enough to share their salmon dinner with me. technolope and even geeked out for a bit with a crazy rendering idea. All in all, very cool.

And the cream ale turned out just fine.

  • Meat Hammer

The good Doctor has finally endorsed Kerry.

“I endorsed John Kerry a long time ago,” he said, “and I will do everything in my power, short of roaming the streets with a meat hammer, to help him be the next President of the United States.”

  • Funky fresh cafe…

The “Kiss Cafe” in Baltimore gets two hearty thumbs up. I’m connected over free wireless, just ate a fine white pizza (big fan of the goat cheese), there’s a live jazz band in the corner, and they even serve alcohol, should alcohol be desired.

Good day at work too. The Hopkins people were cool, and things were productive.

I think I’m going to go pay attention to the band now.

  • Ook

    Stuck in Baltimore.

Not that Baltimore is bad, but it’s like Elvis Costello said: “Oh Baltimore, man it’s horrible, just to survive.”

Flew in to BWI this morning, and already had a voice mail from our sales / marketing guy. Could I stop off at the Navy Research Lab to help out a customer? Sure. No problem. Who, again? Doing what? Customer angry? Rush? Hurry hurry? Sure. I can be there in two hours. Do they have a phone number?

On the way, I visited the folks with the monster cluster (one undergrad and a professor building a 240 node cluster. God help them). They have this huge bundle of extension cords under the door of the machine room. Over the weekend, they’re literally going to string extension cords to other buildings in an attempt to bring all the machines online and run a benchmark. On Monday, the crane is coming in to install the new fans on the roof. The governor is showing up in two weeks to dedicate the new facility. Good luck, godspeed, gotta go, here’s my card.

NRL was fun. Simple problems made more complex by a wicked firewall. I think they were happy with 2.5 hours from “it’s all crap” to “wow, this is pretty cool.” Plus, touched base with an old friend who still works there. Maybe we’ll meet up on Sat. Maybe not. We’re both famous flakes that way. “We simply must hang out sometime. Whatev.

Tomorrow, Hopkins training. I need a DVI -> VGA dongle, like, real bad. Otherwise, they’ll be clustered around my laptop screen for the training. No problem with that really. Could be worse.

Oh yeah: The Red Sox are punishing the Yankees. 6 – 0 in the beginning of the third inning. I recognize this game though. It’s going to suck at the end. I’m going to bed now, to have happy dreams about a team who hasn’t won this particular rivalry in 87 years.

  • Pumpkins

Oh yeah: There’s this thing at the Rhode Island Zoo called the “Pumpkin Spectacular.” We went over the weekend and it was much cooler than I had expected. Apparently there is a nonlinearity in the coolness of carved pumpkins. I mean, one is okay, two are slightly better, three pretty much maxes it out. After that, 10, 15, and 20 are increasingly lame.

However 5,000 pumpkins is pretty damn cool.
