15 years
Going to my 15 year high school reunion today.
I really don’t know what to expect, other than to roll with it.
In other news, with a nod to Paul Krugman, I think it’s safe to say that our economy is “taking it in the shorts.”
Get it? Get it?
Is this thing on?

Free drinks for Obama!
Obama got me free drinks tonight.
I decided to change into my “Obama / Biden ’08” shirt before going in to Adam’s Morgan for a drink with the guys from work. We went to the first bar of the evening (Reef) without incident, other than the Canadian women pulling the old “which are the cool bars” line. Come on, girls, we know what that’s about. Eh?
The onward to a hookah bar at the far end of the street, where we had barely settled in before the four young black folks at a nearby table had bought me (very specifically) a drink because “they liked my shirt.”
Go Obama.
When said drink arrived, I went over and chatted with them. Political science students at Howard University. Some from Kenya, some from other places. They were very interested in why I like Obama, whether I think he’ll win, and (after some talking) where I’m coming from and why.
Good times. So now, if anyone wants to know why I support Obama … it’s because he gets me free drinks at the bar.
Let’s see a Mccain shirt do that. I have no desire to be in a real bar fight, so I leave it as a thought experiment.

Coriell Genomics
Went to Coriell today with the guys from SNPedia for Coriell’s version of a “spit party,” and enrolled in their “Personal Genomics Collaborative”. This is a large (10,000+ individuals, aiming for 100,000+) fishing-trip data gathering study with a very different twist from 23andme. It’s totally free to participate, and in return, I don’t get my raw data. However, as results are vetted by a review board, they will release the “clinically actionable” facts about me, to me. The hope is that this very large pool of data will kick off some of the clinically relevant findings that have thus far been sorely lacking from the genomic revolution.
Met the lead folks, saw the lab, and very nearly got a tour of the machine room. Spent some time talking with a developer on the web interface they’re gonna use to gather additional data from me. A good time all around.

But all my foes will cease to be,
And all my friends will cease to be,
And I will also cease to be,
And likewise everything will cease to be.
