  • hurricane party!

I write from the path of hurricane Omar. It’s scheduled to gain strength to a category two, and beat the tar out of Tortola this evening. We were first summoned off the water, and then kicked off the boat into a villa up the hill. So here we sit, waiting for the rain to subside.

The exodus from the yacht club was entertaining. Dozens of people with the resources to hire a yacht for a week, but without the brains to flee a big storm. Think ‘upscale refugee camp.’

Spirits are high, restaurants are open, and the winds are increasing. See you on the flip side.

  • News

I am pleased to report that the Octoberfest I brewed is pretty darn good. The Imperial Wit (thanks Thor!) is still in secondary. Apparently I still make good beer.

Also, I will be sailing in the British Virgin Islands by tomorrow night. This promises to be a pretty substantial improvement over the past week. for details.

  • Rent vs. Own

Question for people who read about and think about history and finance:

In a sustained economic downturn, is it better to be renting an apartment, or to own a house?

There are a bunch of risks and benefits either way. Rent drops as times get rough, mortgages generally do not. Renters are somewhat vulnerable to their landlord going bankrupt, where owners have “local” control over their finances.

    Any good references on this?

  • Heroes

I’ve been watching the first season of Heroes. It’s good TV. Not high art, not great drama, but good TV. Like the Sarah Connor Chronicles or Galactica.

The thing that just came to mind is that the Haitian is very, well, accurately Haitian.

Go and get to know some Haitians if you want to know what I mean. Oh yeah, and watch the show – or something.

  • Communication difficulty

It’s only taken about 24 hours of fairly poor interactions with people before I switched from Gah! Why are you all being so difficult and touchy! to Huh, perhaps I’m not communicating very well here. Perhaps its time to cut back on the coffee or something.

While it’s still possible that you’re all just dumb-asses … the simpler solution appears to reside over on my side of the monitor.

So when I saw post this, I felt a certain resonance.

You only think this is a problem because you don’t know what the fuck is going on. Those of us in the know are much calmer. You might want to ask questions and actually listen to the answers.

And then the GDMF RAID card blew up, taking my morning’s work with it. Okay, the work is notionally still there, I just need to do a fairly subtle and delicate process to coax it back to life.

Keep your head down, return fire if you can.

  • Harsh

I was greatly saddened when I read this answer, because it forced me to rewrite the entire first chapter of my next book, The 10 Most Retarded Things I Have Read This Year.

We worked on sacrifice throws at Judo today. Specifically, Tomonage. Instead of trying to describe it, here’s the sacrifice throw master:

  • Meditative stabilization

Looked at another house yesterday. Quite close to both a red line stop and a nice yoga studio. I wasn’t overwhelmed, but the price was right – and it’s a lot of house for that price. The best part – there’s a room upstairs that would make the cutest little meditation sanctuary.

Picked up How to See Yourself as you Really Are by the Dalai Lama. It’s a relatively clear beginners guide to the Buddhist concepts of emptiness and the development of insight and wisdom. At this point I have very little idea what would be good starting points for other people – but it covers those core concepts in clear and concise language. I find that I much prefer books written by the Dalai Lama, rather than texts by others, derived from meetings and conversations with him.

In it, he lays out some relatively measurable milestones in meditative stabilization. Interesting that, just like with any other learned skill, we can map out the way it’s going to go if you keep working at it. Even our minds are not so terribly special and different from one another! “If this is happening when you meditate, then you are probably also experiencing this, and these are some steps that have worked for other people.”

I find that I’m probably at what he describes as the second or third of nine or ten stages. Broadly speaking, I can now recognize distraction as it’s happening … but it’s still a constant effort of patching up my mental state rather than “abiding.”

  • Remodeling

I may be buying an unfinished house. In its defense, I would wake up, look out the huge windows, and see the ocean.

Anyone out there in LJ land know how much, for example, a “floor” costs? How about “walls?” I can price appliances, and even cabinets … but I’m sorta lost at “floor.”

Also: If you’ve ever had delusions of grandeur about living spaces (technolope), now would be a great time to spend some time with me.

And now, back to watching Heroes.
