  • Japanese

I need a japanese translator. Like a good, no kidding, “really knows the language like a native” translator.

I need to hire this person to do some “interface localization” for a chunk of software.

Where do I start? Do I talk to the local university language programs? Do I loiter around the best tokyo style sushi restaurants? Do I wander japantown muttering “ohayo gozaimasu! watashi wa geek desu! nihogo wakarimasta?”

  • “idea” meme

Hey, here’s a “meme:” Let’s all stop using the word “meme” when me mean “idea.” Let’s instead accept that “ideas,” “concepts,” and “things we do” have properties that are something like those of living organisms. The world they live in is composed of our conscious minds. Yes, yes. Ideas even evolve and change to become better fits to the mind-worlds that they inhabit. Yes, insufferably yes, ideas do have this property.

We don’t really need an additional word for it, do we?

Oh wait. “ideas” weren’t invented by the HIP HIP HIP new cool generation of thinkers who are SMARTER SMARTER SMARTER than anyone has ever been. Therefore, we do need a new word. Sorry my bad.

    Yours in surly curmudgeon-ness.

  • Exercise is good for you.

This is a little gross. Maybe a 3 on the grand scale from 1 to obstetrics, but still I’ll conceal it here

  • GO FREAKIN USA!!!!!

    Clear channel terrifies me.

Clear Channel kills nonprofit’s ad for N.Y.’s Times Square.

“Meyer said the decision to reject the ad was made independently by the Spectacolor division. But he said the company generally does not run copy that would be unsuitable for children or cause them to ask difficult questions, nor does it run political attacks that could be considered “personally offensive.’”

Yeah, I hate it when kids ask difficult questions. Damn corporate pigs. We should shoot them for going after the dogs.

  • Floors

Pictures from ripping up the carpet

    http://chris.dwan.org/pics/floors

My stuff arrived today. Thank you, Ace – Atlas Van lines. Now I just need to squeeze out money for the week of late-chaos I just went through. Wheeee. Maybe a nasty-gram to the closing attorney while I’m at it. Got another form that they forgot to have me sign at closing, today. It has nothing to do with my title or deed (got those in the same envelope). I think it’ll make a good lead in to my letter. “Please find enclosed the most recent signature request from my closing of the 1st of this month.”

Publicity photo for my article tomorrow at 1pm. People seem to be buying our products and services at a terrifying rate. This is awesome from the business side, and terrifying from the “does the help queue ever get empty?” side.

Now: Off to see if I can find my coffee pot in the FIVE TONS of stuff they just dumped in my house.

  • Done…

Now why’d we go and leave ourselves an extra nine hours in the schedule? The living room, dining room, and master bedroom are painted, and the NASTY old carpet (and associated tack strips and staples) are out by the trash. Beautiful hardwood has been revealed. Pictures when I’m not connected by cell phone – modem.

Anyway, the movers supposedly show up in nine hours, so I’m going to get some sleep. Still giving 30% odds that this is some sort of cruel sham to make me think this is the last night on the air mattress.
