  • Art weekend 2008

Just back from Art Weekend with way too many LJ folks to type out by hand. Seriously: technolope, capital_l, redmed, aerospcgrl, multiplexer, amnesiadust, ect and mcniadh … (update: cyrrin and fire_starter_ are on LJ too! Who knew?) and 2 others who may or may not have ye-olde-livejournal.

Pictures here, including the results of actually opening the two Sumi-e kits that we’ve had sitting around forever. I was thrilled that with only two days of trying, I was able to create representational art that was good enough to go on the refrigerator dammit.

I had a great time, and I’ll see you there next year.

  • Porch

I had been working all day with the NASA folks, and I got back intending to take a run and perhaps a dip in the pool before going for dinner. I was feeling pretty good about myself, lookin’ sharp in the shades, khakis, and pressed collar shirt. Solving problems for a living and all that. I casually opened the sliding door to my third floor patio, stepped out to breathe and decompress, and shut the door behind me to save on the air conditioning.

Yeah, I locked myself on the porch at the hotel.

I knew as soon as I heard the “click,” how things were going to play out … but I entertained a few other options first: I thought about how long it might take to die out there. I could just give up. In their haste to get to the body, they might not notice that the door had been locked … but I discarded that idea pretty quickly. Even dehydration would take longer than I had before housekeeping discovered me.

I called to chat, and pass the time, thinking that maybe the situation would resolve itself … but she was eating dinner and didn’t pick up.

I looked across the courtyard and saw a couple of other men on their porches, reading, so I sat down in the chair and chilled out. Mmmmmmm. I considered striking up a conversation but decided against it. “Hey!” “Hey?” “Yeah … does your door open?”

Still locked on the porch. Third floor. I took some time to examine the opposite side of the courtyard and decided that there was no way I was scaling the sheer stucco. Wrought iron would have given me a chance. See for a discussion of the merits of stucco in these situations.

Finally, I bit the bullet and called the front desk from my cell phone. They agreed to send the maintenance guy up, but not before the whole front desk crew had come out by the pool to wave at me. “Hi!” “hi.” “Hey!” “hi.”

I’m writing this from the bar.

  • Demons

I have never seen anything that looks so much like I would imagine “summoning a demon from hell” might look, as this video:

  • Aliens

Spent the afternoon at s ancestral mansion, along with , , , and maybe 10 other assorted folks. We were there to hunt and destroy “invasive” plant species in the woods out back, to make room for the locals.

After the plants were dead, we ate pizza in the “summer kitchen,” and spoke of many things.

    Good times.

  • Brief updates

A sound / feeling very much like “grrrrRRRPOW” in my mouth last night woke me from a solid sleep. I looked in the mirror and discovered that I’ve somehow chipped the corner of my (very nice, expensive, time consuming, uncomfortable to put in) new crown. It might be a teeth grinding thing, but it’s a *front* tooth. What the hell is up with that? Remember to floss, kids. Dental care sucks more and more as you age.

Went to see Iron Man again with because, well, it’s an entertaining movie and we wanted to be entertained. Stuck around for the extra bit after the credits – which makes it even that much more awesome.

Spent most of yesterday cleaning. It was one of those days when I actually had a *desire* to clean / mop / and so on … so I went with it.

Last night, took me on a date. It was very cool. We saw “She Loves Me,” which is a musical theatre piece. I’m not much for musical theatre … but in moderation it can be very entertaining.

Hung out at my dad’s place for a day, which helped with the ‘old mental status. Had a great conversation with my brother, while standing in the garden foraging for strawberries.

Spent last week in North Carolina messing with a cool compute cluster. Actually got to see IRL, and met . Saw the 36th fastest (public) computer in the world sitting in a hallway because of a facilities miscalculation.

Going to NASA again next week. Hopefully they’ll be flying the F-22’s again.

  • Dance moves

I wish I could dance like these guys. It gets better and better towards the end.

  • Photos of TV

As pointed out by , Photos of TV is made of pure awesome. It captures, as in a great portrait, the frozen essence of a fluid medium:

  • Socket

The longer I sit in this depressing airport bar in Raleigh, the more reasonable it seems to me to climb up on my table, unplug the TV over my head, and plug in my laptop.

Hey, I’m not even *watching* the TV that’s right over my head.

  • Transformers

    Perhaps I need a hobby.

  • Ooooooo

I don’t usually do this, but it’s late and I’ve been at the wine again (thanks and !)
