\nthe cows ate grass.
\nTomorrow, and the next, and every day after that,
\nthe cows will eat grass.
\nThey'll eat until they can't stand up,
\nand even then, collapsed upon the earth in their last hours,
\nif they can reach it with their mouths, they'll eat grass.
\nThey'll eat until they've eaten it all, until there are only
\na few stray blades
\nhalfway buried under boulders--then
\nthey'll nudge aside the boulders
\nwith their large and knowing lips,
\nand eat that grass, too.
\nOnly the smallest calves, today,
\nthe ones no bigger than dogs, are lying down.
\nThey gaze out onto the landscape like dreamers:
\nthe sky marbled with fatty clouds;
\nthe cherry trees beginning to leaf;
\nthe first few poppies, unfurling their cadmium banners;
\nthe fences making some things possible, and others difficult;
\nthe shadows falling from, and following, each thing;
\nand the world seems so strange, so common and wondrous
\nat once, that the calves ask the cows eating grass,
\nIs this all there is?
\nAnd the answer comes back from mouths full of grass:
\nThis is all there is.<\/code><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
